Barrick Gold of Australia Ltd
In what is believed to be a first for the global gold mining industry, IONIK Consulting has been retained by Barrick Gold of Australia Ltd (part of the global Barrick Mining Company - www.barrick.com) to develop and implement a risk-based inspection (RBI) system to ensure the integrity of the process tanks containing cyanide solutions at their Granny Smith, Lawlers, Darlot, Plutonic, Kanowa Bell and Porgera mine sites in Australia.
On completion of the project, it is intended that compliance with the International Cyanide Management Code will be achieved. Compliance, primarily relates to the proactive avoidance of leakage of cyanide from tanks and associated facilities into the environment.
The RBI program will be developed in accordance with industry best practise and compliance with API 653 and EEMUA 159-2003 in order to ensure that a potential tank leak will be identified prior to leakage occurring.
The RBI program once complete will include a detailed assessment of accidental leakage into the environment through structural integrity failures, the adequacy of the inspection regimes, as well as the ifficacy of methodologies utilised to inspect the tanks. Additionally, modelling will be undertaken to estimate timelines to failure and modes of failure, along with a recommended best practise regime for replacement or repair as a whole or in part.
