IONIK Consulting (Indonesia) Pipeline Replacement Study

ONGC India - South Bassein Field

Produced gas from the South Bassein Field is transported to land via two pipelines, a newer 42” line, and a 36” line installed in 1984. The 36” pipeline (the 36” SBHT Pipeline) carries sour gas to the Hazira Plant, and is nearing the end of the original design life of the cathodic protection (CP) system (25 years).

These pipelines play a significant role in the national gas supply infrastructure, as they are responsible for delivering a large portion of the nation’s gas onshore for processing. An extended operational life for this pipeline is required, up to an additional 25 years of service.

In this study, JP Kenny and Ionik Consulting have been commissioned to review the findings of the previous studies, and provide independent assessment of the findings and recommendations, with specific consideration given to the option of replacing the 36” pipeline in order to achieve an extended service life for this pipeline.

Project Scope (2008-2009):

  • Detailed review of all available inspection, design, and operational information
  • Assessment of the CP system condition, including re-calculation of original CP basis of design
  • Global review of case studies for coating system performance, and CP system performance in similar service
  • Fitness-for service assessment of the pipeline, reviewing CP survey, in-line inspection results, and performing a look-ahead review for future operations
  • Detailed techno-economic assessment of CP retrofit, inspection, and line replacement options
  • Determining risk profile and repair/rectification requirements for the pipeline.
