IONIK Consulting (Indonesia) Freespan Analysis and Management

ConocoPhillips Indonesia - Block B Offshore Field

ConocoPhillips Indonesia (COPI) is the operator of over 40 gas and liquid pipelines in the Block B offshore field (including the Belanak liquids facilities) situated 450km northeast of Singapore, including international gas transmission lines.

COPI completed a pipeline survey program in 2007 and discovered that a significant number of spans exceeded the allowable span length criteria. ConocoPhillips Indonesia (COPI) asked IONIK to perform a pipeline freespan study, including FEA modelling and review of rectification strategies.

IONIK / JP Kenny capabilities and credentials in this domain and the strategy and execution were endorsed by a ConocoPhillips global peer review and the Government Regulator, and as a result IONIK was awarded a contract in 2008 to review and help manage the freespan issues.

Subsequently in June 2009, IONIK was awarded a contract to provide spans analysis on a tight timeframe, including providing offshore engineering support. The tight analysis and rectification schedule required the support of the Houston, KL, and Perth JPKenny offices.

A follow-on project was required to allow completion of the infield and trunkline span analysis (28 pipelines), using Abaqus FEA models to determine the VIV response of the spans. The large number of freespans requiring analysis has come about as a result of updated metocean data.

Project Scope:

  • Freespan review and analysis
  • Offshore survey Engineering Support
  • Cost-benefit analysis and freespan management strategies
  • Detailed engineering analysis of freespans, including detailed dynamic/static Finite Element response analysis
  • Review of inspection methodologies, metocean data, evaluation of SSS effectiveness, span development analysis, and span management strategy development.
