Browse Development

Browse is a proposed green field LNG development incorporating the Brecknock, Calliance and Torosa gas-condensate fields.

The fields are located approximately 400km northwest of Broome, Western Australia.

The Brecknock and Calliance fields, and part of the Torosa field, are located in deep water (500m to 700m).  The other part of the Torosa field is in shallow water, below Scott Reef, which is a coral atoll.  Scott Reef consists of two separate lagoons, where the water depth varies from 0m to 70m.

Woodside Energy Limited (WEL) is investigating various strategies for the Browse development - known as "themes".  These themes include Offshore OLNG (OLNG), Browse to Kimberley (B2K) and Browse to Burrup (B2B).

JP Kenny (JPK) and IONIK Consulting (IONIK) have been engaged by WEL to carry out pre-FEED design of the Browse Project subsea and pipelines scope.  Previous scopes of work have covered the OLNG and B2K themes.  The current focus is the B2B theme.

IONIK is providing support in the following areas:  corrosion engineering, corrosion management, materials and coating selection, erosion modelling, project engineering and cost estimating.

The project presents many technical challenges including:

  • A very long, large diameter gas export line (potentially up to 48" x 1,000km).
  • Water depths to 500m.
  • Corrosion Management of CRA, carbon steel and hybrid CRA / carbon steel pipelines in muliphase flow at high temperature, high pressure and with high CO2.
  • Waxy condensate content with WAT above the ambient temperature in deep water.
  • Use of steel catenary risers and infield floating platforms.

The Browse joint venture includes WEL, as operator, with approximately 50% interest, BP and Chevron Australia with 16.67% each, and BHP Billiton and Shell with 8.33% each.
